...within our existing operations. Beforewe dig into that Matthew, can you get the listeners a little bit betterbackground on both Duke and your role? There sure so Duke University isObviously Research University in the southeast, so really global institution.I've worked there since February of last year, but I've been a Durhamresident for many years, and I've observed Duke and its growth and theimpact that it has in Durham North Carolina in the state of North Carolinaacross the country and really around the world. I've had the chance to helplaunch at new university that were cofounding in China, starting its firstundergraduate class. This fall and worked on our online strategy, digitalstrategy, academic technology on campus, and it's been really meaningful andpowerful Ju for the past year and a half. So that's that's Duke my team.There is called the learning innovation...

...team and our mission is to bringtogether the tool, boalls and technologies for learning on campuswith those for learning for the World Rit large and we view those as twosides of the same coin, serving learners on campus and cearning servinglearners around the world. Awesome Matthew, coding, business, other skills,boot camps are often portrayed in the headlines as a potential replacement totraditional higher education, based on everything that you've seen happen withboot camps over the past five years. Do you believe boot camps are a legitimatethreat to the undergraduate degree? I don't think they are, and ai published a piece recently in theevolution, arguing that food camps are largely complementary to four yearundergraduate education and the reason I think that is because what we do inthe four year degree is really not about getting the first job, and it'sreally not about your first order...

...skills. It's a lifelong investment thatyou're making in foundational skills and knowledge that enables your successthroughout your life. Of course, in order to be on the road to that success,you need to get a first job, and that's where I see boot camps coming in beingreally tied into industry needs employer needs, and I think what theideal solution might be for a learner today would be some Mashup of thefoundational, critical thinking communication collaboration skills thatare really inherent in the four year degree. That's what we say we're aboutwith the technical training. That's really tied to the labor market, thetimely skills that you get in data science, BOOT camp coding, boot, campdesign, bood camp. The PR popularity of these boot camps is obviously large.You have some coting boot camps, promising and guaranteeing you're ongetting eighty thousano dollar a year job after a three month. Boot camp willguarantee the job and the employers are...

...standing by waiting for to graduate ata very high level. What do you think boot camps truly offer that traditionalhigher Ed may not always make available o the students? I think they figured out how to bereally responsive to current skills that are in demand in the market and todesign programs that are quick turnaround for those skills. You knowin technology, the programming languages and the skills that are indemand changed. So often it's really hard when your model involves lots ofcommittees, and you know to two years of planning to add a new degree or at anew program. It's really hard to respond as quickly as the labor marketmight need. So that' sort of what bood camps are able to do. The traditionalhigher Ed cant they're able to switch in courses which outcourses reallyquickly and be really responsive, and...

...that is an advantage, but it's not theBal and Endall of education, and I think it's that's why I think the twoare complementary and the ideal combination is to have the set oftimeless gills that comes from you, Ow, the core of the liberal arts and thetime lease gills that comes from technology data science that are reallyresponsive to what the labor market is asking graduates to have when they comeout of school. So your believe, your hope is that highred needs to do abetter job, incorporating the hands on skills. These boo camps offer withinour existing operations. Can you talk us through the three literacy strategy?You believe highered need to take more seriously absolutely so. This comesfrom a recent book from the President of Northeastern University Joseph onand the book is called robot proof and it's a vision for how higher educationshould respond to the challenges of artificial intelligence and his view isthat thereare, three competencies that...

...should make up the future ofpotsecondary education. Their data competencies, their technologycompenencies, and there are the humane compedencesand. He calls thecombination of als three, all three of those humanics and the job of theeducator and the educational institution is to weave those threetogether into this really tightly. Couple bundle that help students makethei connections between them and build this kind of feedback loop between thetheoretical and the apply that enhances both of them and that's a reallypowerful argument. For me, I think in integrating stem and the humanities andthinking of those as branches of the same tree is a newreport from the national academieis calls them. I love it. ...thousand and twelve or one of thelargest Corsera partners, millions of learners have taken our courses, andit's been really successful for Duke in extending the impact of our faculty,Our institution, to learners around the world. What we realized, though, wasthat there could be some tremendous value in benefits in the kinds ofcourses that we've offered online to the wider community on campus as well,and so what we did through a new partnership that we call Corsera forTUK was made available all the content, which is mostly in the professionalareas of technology, detascience stats not exclusively, but mostly in thoseareas and made that available to our own campus community through a singlesign on system. So a duke student or Safor Faculty member t goes to Corserand as recognizas a dukkuser and can take any of our courses and, mostimportantly, earn credentials, and...

...those cinantals are recognized by thelefor market and and build a kind of cocurricular set of learningexperiences that are tailor to their needs that compliment what they do oncampus and obviously you know course: ther courses are selfpaced theyare fully online, we'vepositioned them as cocurricular ungraded, and really intrinsicallymotivated learning experiences that students can add into their formaleducation and balance out the work that they're doing on campus with thesereally timely labor market sensitive in demand skills that we know employerswant. So we think there's going to be a lot of value. That's created throughthat the Corsera credentials are already the most widely usedcredentials on Linkdon's platform. They recently achieved that milestone, soyou know there's clear value in those predentials in the labor market. That'sdemonstrated by the fact that people are using them to describe the skillsthat they have. We wanted to make those...

...benefits available to our community. Welaunched Corsera for Duke in December. Several other universities have nowfollowed suit, which we love to see and we've had enrollments in the four digits, whichyou know, an institution with only fifteenthousand students, we've beenreally pleased to see the enrollments and the uptake among students, and it'sgone over really well among students as well, some really impressive earlyresponse, Metrics Matthew. Finally, can you give us any next deps advice forinstitutions who maybe currently see boot camps as a threat to theirlivelihood? Can you help talk us off the ledge a little bit, I'm not readyto say that they're not entirely a threat. I think it sort of depends onwhat your institution does. I think you knowfor vocational for profit,education. You know if there's a BOODCAP, that's offering a six monthprogram to do something that might have taken longer and might not have had thesame results might not have had the...

...same employment guarantee. I thinkthere is a threat, so I think the competitive picture isprobably different for different kinds of institutions. It's true, thecommunity college and rollments are down. That's not true for yourinstitutional inroments. If you look across the pot secondary system in theUS, so I don't think it's a blanket argument, but but what I would say isthat I think it's incumbent on leaders in higher education to focus on skillsand skills should not be considered a bad word. There's something reallypowerful about empowering our students with the toolkits that they're going toneed in order to get their first job, which will set them up for their secondand third and fourth. We should not upend entirely what we do in ourinstitutions in order to provide those skills, but we don't have to. I thinkwe can offer them in ways that are complementary, both in courses throughmodular, complementary approaches...

...during the summers during breaksthrough COE curricular approaches. This is a huge opportunity forexperimentation and innovation, and I hope leaders in Higher Ed see it. Asthat see, it is an opportunity more than a threat and see the the potentialfor building this kind of balance system, which is focused on the timelyand the timelist, the knowledge and the skills, the Hanszon and the theoretical,and the value that we add comes through the integration of those matthew thanksso much fof your time and your thoughts today, what's the best place forlisteners to connect with you, they have any follow up questions.
