I'm Eric Olson, AVP of marketing at Helix Education, and we're here today with Dr Malick Corey, President of Unity College. Malick, welcome to the show. Hi, how are you going? I'm doing awesome. I'm really excited to talk with you today about the pros and cons of hiring online exclusive faculty and staff. Before we dig into that, Malik, can you give the listeners a little bit of background on Unity College? Sure, Unity College, located in unity, Maine, is those America's environmental college. We are a small private college that has a national focus on socimblies, science and all of our programs are focused around environment. So satability and basically the concept of how humans, society and the Environ meant work together in harmony. Awesome. It's a super unique, important and critical position in high red right now. So congratulations for that. Let's Sir off by talking about this very common problem that unity faced and many of our institution space, getting our on campus faculty excited to start teaching online classes and the difficulties in doing so. So I think that the problem is a strong word. I think that many faculty members came through the Academy with a very traditional approach of the classroom, the flip...

...crossroom and the like, and I actually I think the reason why unity college has been able to be successful is because we understood that the content that our faculty members have is very relevant and very critical. The issue is, how did we do we provide training, how do we provide access and how do we provide opportunity instead of just saying hey, now you have to teach online. The problem, I see is more that we as a college just expected faculty members to understand how to all of a sudden take a course that they've learned, and I've done for years, in a very traditional format and put it online. So I think the problem is how do we get how do we train and support faculty to do that? Also, like most professions, not all faculty members are experts in different kinds of teaching. Some of great lecturism, of great practitioners, some are great for technology. So I think the problem is when technology came to be as part of this online movement, we have a higher education industry did not do a good job of understanding how to bring faculty along. And so you know, for me, I know you're asking about the problem of the solution right now. The problem was we've just basically asked people to change mediums on delivering of a subject without, in some cases, adequate training or the like. And, like most intellectuals, like most people, those are resistance that are pushback. I'm not necessarily sure that was uns all their faults. Now that's a that's a great way to frame the reality and Higher Ed. So let's talk about your really when, I think is a very unique solution and unity, hiring a holy separate distance education staff, including instructors, including technicians, who are specifically excited about online education. Yes, I mean I think it's like anything else, in like any organization, different parts of your employee days are interested in doing different things.

So, for example, we ask we have a number of faculty members who have been teaching for years. They've been teaching in a very traditional, highly tactile and, by the way, all of our faculty use our online platform. They just use it as a supplement to their facetoface classes. So it's a little so we spent five years just integrating the technology into the class. However, what do you're right. We took a very, very different tact because instead of seeing to all of our faculty, you will be teaching online, we said here's the tools, use it and they love it because now they take their students out of the classroom and they use a technology. But to your point about exclusivity, we came to a few faculty and said, okay, we are going to create this online program it's not for everyone, instead of trying to take the traditional curriculum, traditional pedagogy and trying to shove it into an online module, having of you are interested in in kind of doing that, because what we've found it's unfair for a faculty member to basically learn an entirely new way of teaching, while what they're doing is working and and there's nothing wrong with that. It's a different audience and a different market that needs it. So for us, a solution is simple. Those of you, I look at it as a transition, those of you who are to use the technology and incorporated within your Ting your traditional pedagogy, go for it, and everyone is doing that. Those of you who are to take a step up or step out and teach the different market that is online, we will provide you with the training, will provide you with curriculum designers and the like. And so they got to opt in to online instead of having to opt out right many faculty members across the country who are jumping at the bits. Yeah, technology. So why White Force Faculty.
